Frequently asked questions
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic practice originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves the gentle insertion of very fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body. It is used to support the body’s natural healing processes, restore balance, and improve overall health and wellbeing.
How does acupuncture work (Eastern perspective)?
From an Eastern medicine perspective, acupuncture works by regulating the flow of Qi (vital energy) through pathways called meridians. When Qi becomes blocked or imbalanced, discomfort or illness may arise. Acupuncture helps restore harmony within the body, supporting physical, emotional, and energetic balance.
How does acupuncture work (Western perspective)?
From a Western medical viewpoint, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and influences physiological processes such as blood flow, muscle relaxation, and neurotransmitter release. Research suggests it may help regulate pain pathways, reduce inflammation, and support nervous system balance, including stress response and autonomic regulation.
Is acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture is generally not painful. The needles used are extremely thin—much finer than those used for injections. Most patients feel little to no discomfort. Sensations may include a mild ache, warmth, heaviness, or tingling, which are normal and often indicate therapeutic activation.
What conditions can acupuncture help with?
Acupuncture is commonly used to support pain management, stress and anxiety, sleep issues, headaches, digestive health, women’s health, hormonal balance, fatigue, and overall nervous system regulation. It can be used as a standalone therapy or alongside other medical care.
What should I expect during my first session?
Your first visit includes a thorough discussion of your health history, current concerns, and goals. Based on this assessment, a personalized treatment plan is created, and acupuncture treatment is provided during the same visit.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on the condition, its duration, and individual response. Some patients notice improvement quickly, while others benefit from a series of treatments. Your progress will be regularly reviewed, and your plan adjusted as needed.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. Sterile, single-use needles are used, and treatments are tailored to each individual’s health status and comfort level.
Can acupuncture be combined with conventional medical care?
Absolutely. Acupuncture can complement conventional treatments and is often used alongside medical care, physical therapy, or other therapies. It does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment but can be an effective supportive approach.
Do I need to believe in acupuncture for it to work?
No. Acupuncture does not require belief to be effective. Its benefits are based on physiological and regulatory effects that occur regardless of personal belief systems.
